Raising our Children: The future of residential care
19 November 2018
City Hall, Cardiff

In the UK, the use of children’s homes in social care has declined dramatically over the past thirty years, while a lack of trust in their capacity to provide positive environments for children has proliferated. Expensive and found to be of variable quality, children’s homes are frequently perceived as a ‘last resort’ option for local authorities to take where fostering has broken down.

At this event we brought together practitioners, academics, policymakers, and young people with experience of living in residential homes to consider recent findings, experiences and innovations. Together we explored what the future of residential care in Wales ought to be, and how we can deliver the very best homes for our most vulnerable children.

Attended by 120 individuals from local authorities, including managers, practitioners, students, academics and policy makers, the event was a huge success.

A wide panel of speakers were in attendance including Sally Holland, Children's Commissioner for Wales.
