ExChange Wales is excited to invite you to a screening of Omar Mohamed’s new documentary, Towards Brotherly Love: Stories of Care, Catastrophe and Change. This powerful film explores the journeys of Black children and young people with care experience in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as well as their families and professionals working with them, highlighting the impact of systemic racism on the children’s social care system in the US. Through stories of resilience and community innovation, the documentary inspires new routes for change and reform for consideration globally.
The event will feature a screening of the documentary, followed by a panel discussion with Omar Mohamed and others involved in children’s social care with a focus on lessons for UK social work.
Biography
Omar Mohamed is an activist, sibling kinship carer, children and families social worker, lecturer and researcher with lived experiences of the children’s social care system from birth to the age of 16. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2024. His Fellowship focuses on addressing the unique challenges faced by Black children in care, including unmet cultural and racial identity needs, experiences of racism, and a lack of representation in decision-making. He recently authored a chapter in the book ‘The Anti-Racist Social Worker In Practice’ focused on social work activism and practical examples of anti-racism across the UK.
