Everyday Parenting with Care Experience – call for survey participants

“They are my proudest achievement to date, and I love them” (Tom).

Our study aims to understand the everyday experiences of UK parents with a background of care, in order to highlight positive parenting practices and celebrate parenting achievements.

The research seeks to document experiences that are usually unheard and share narratives from parents with care experience who are proud of the children that they parent. By sharing these powerful stories, we hope to challenge some of the stigma faced by those with care experience and generate a more balanced narrative for children in care and care leavers.

What We’ve Learned So Far

In our study, so far, we have interviewed 25 mothers and 9 fathers, aged between 23 and 60, and with children aged between 6 months and 31 years old. Parents have told us about the overwhelming love that they have for their children. However, some parents have told us that their care experience means that they sometimes face additional pressures.

Parents spoke about the practical challenges of juggling childcare and their own need for a break without family support. Parents, particularly mums, also spoke about a pressure for their parenting to be ‘perfect’.

“I just want to be the best parent that I can be.” (Tina)

We Need Your Voice for the Next Step

Now, we need your help to see if these key findings are shared more widely. We’ve designed a short survey to follow up on the themes that emerged from our interviews.

Who Should Participate?

The survey is open to all UK based parents with a care background who would like to share some of their positive parenting moments and experiences.
