In Care and Incredible: 30 Care Experienced Superstars You Need to Meet

The children’s book ‘In Care and Incredible: 30 Care Experienced Superstars You Need to Meet’, written by Dr Rosie Canning and Dr Dee Michell and illustrated by Lauren Fernandes, will be published on 26 July 20026.

The book highlights well-known historical and contemporary figures who experienced adoption, foster care, kinship care or residential care in childhood. Through accessible biographical portraits the book aims to challenge negative stereotypes about children in care and care-experienced adults.

It features record-breaking athletes, award-winning writers, activists, inventors, and leaders who have shaped history, including Sir Isaac Newton, Barack Obama and Jenni Fagan. Readers of the book will learn about the stories of 30 incredible people who spent some time in foster care, lived with relatives or who were adopted.

As well as celebrating individual achievement, the book places these stories in a broader social history of care, belonging and representation. It asks whose stories are made visible, and how care experience is understood across time and across different fields.

It is a fantastic resource for families, service providers, educationalists, and anyone with an interest in some brilliant care experienced people throughout history.
