Artists researching and researchers crafting: Artistic Residencies as sites for entering into relationships with concepts

In this encounter Brazilian graffiti artist and activist CinnaSolar and researchers Gemma Lucas (University of Exeter) and Jimmy Turner (Binks Research Hub, University of Edinburgh) will continue on their creative journeys towards co-producing artistic/scholarly understandings and reformulations of the concept of gender equality, begun in the artistic residencies ‘Masculinidades NoBela’ (Rio de Janeiro, 2019 – Cinna and Jimmy) and ‘Wild Hive X CinnaSolar’ (virtual, 2021 – Cinna and Gemma). The research presented is partially funded by SWDTPWCCEH and was supported by Arts & Culture Exeter.

Gemma has recently reflected on her experiences of this project.

If you would like to join Cinna, Gemma and Jimmy for hands-on creative activities in person, please register separately.

What to expect/bring on the day

  • Please bring along an item that you have seen and interacted with that day, something that you’ve had some kind of an emotional connection with (something that’s made you happy, sad, annoyed etc.).
  • Arts/craft materials will be provided for in-person attendees, but if you’re joining us online, it would be great if you could have to hand anything crafty that you have at home (even if it’s just pen and paper, but felt-tips/paints/scissors/glue etc. would make it more fun).

The event will be recorded and published on the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health YouTube channel, so by attending you acknowledge you may be recorded. To maintain privacy, you are welcome to keep your video turned off and change your Zoom screen name.
